Fixed Term renwal limit & conversion to permanent status

Looking to get something confirmed about employment law here.

I started working for my present employer on July 1st 2000 on a three year contract. This was renewed for another 3 years starting from July 1st 2003.

This [broken link removed].

says

*(1)* Employees on fixed term contracts that commenced prior to 14th July 2003

*Where, on or after the passing of this Act (14th July 2003), a fixed term employee completes or has completed his or her third year of continuous[4] employment with his or her employer or associate employer, his or her fixed term contract may be renewed on only one occasion and any such renewal shall be for a fixed term of no longer than one year.

Does this mean that next time they must make me permanent or can they renew if for another year?

Re: Fixed Term renwal limit & conversion to permanent st

I'm not a legal expert but my reading of the extract that you quote would be that your contract can be renewed once for one year.

Re: Fixed Term renwal limit & conversion to permanent st

After July 2003, there may be only one renewal and this may not exceed one year in duration.

At this point, the employer has to either terminate your connection with the company or keep you on as a regular employee. There are no other options.

Biggles,

That's the interpretation I was hoping for.

Noel2004,

The way you're reading it is the same way I interpret it.
