Fitting an immersion timer: Cost?

Hi

I have the standard switch for the immersion, on / off, bath / sink and would really like to get some kind of timer so that the immersion can be controlled.

Otherwise it is being left on as people in the house can forget to turn it off and it will end up costing a fortune.

Does anyone know what type of timer I can buy and roughly what would I have to pay the electrician as I doubt I would be able to do this myself.

Hi Clubman, I had already done a search but most of the threads I had read either had a timer already and were replacing an old one or best way to heat water. As this will be the first time one has been installed in the house I wanted info on costs / what is the best one to buy from previous new installments. Thanks
 
That search links to at least one and maybe more threads outlining the costs of fitting the sort of timer you need to an existing immersion setup. I did this myself (for my mother's oil fired central heating) and if you read the threads in question you will see that it cost c. €40 for the unit from Maplin and that it can easily be fitted to an immersion already wired to a master switch if you know what you are doing and are comfortable with doing some basic electrical DIY. There are probably other units available for different prices - I didn't shop around much.
 
Very easy job for someone who knows what they are doing. Got a timer for about €35 or something and a mate fitted it in 15 minutes or thereabouts.
 
Hi,
Use a flash immermat, they are about €40 and are easy to fit. You can either put them in instead of switch, they will fit in back box of switch. All the terminals are marked, just be sure to turn off fed from fuse board.

You can also put them between the switch and immersion, they come with their own back box.
 
You've just reminded me, I 'forgot' to pay my brother for the one he fitted for me earlier this year. Lets hope he doens't read this and follow up on it...
 
Presumably you're not already on a dual day/night Nightsaver setup in which case the immersion should really already be controlled by one of those Horstmann E7 or similar timers?

Is it also possible to get a switch etc. to adjust the temperature of the water as well as having a timer on it?

theres a thermostat in the immersion. remove cover and set using a small flat head screw driver.
 
Thanks for your replies. Re-read Clubmans link and TBH it started to go over my head.

I think I have found a handyman to put it in for me but if someone that is the know, could please provide a link for a good timer that would suit the electrical needs of an immersion I would be very grateful. As from previous thread (belows quote) if i do not get the correct one I could be in trouble.

make sure for christs sake that the timer in question is rated for the very large current that the immersion draws...you should be sourcing these type of things from a specialist supplier such as Heat Merchants, rather than for example off a shelf in Roches Stores.

DavyJones, This prob sounds daft! but would you have a pic of this, as I had a look at mine the other night and I could not see the cover :confused:

People already have!!! E.g. the one that I mentioned in the thread about my mother's OFCH and the one mentioned above by another poster. There are a few others mentioned in other threads.
 
Can anyone tell me is it possible to use a delay switch on the immersion, such as the one attached? So that you hit it on once and then it goes off automatically, just like a switch for a room.
