Fireplace

Hi,

I am in the middle of renovating and have just decommissioned and ripped out a back boiler from a fireplace. Now just have a gaping hole in the living room where the chimney brest is.

Would like to put in an open fireplace. What is the minimum I need to do this?

I know there are mantles, inserts and hearths. Do you need all three or can you have an open fireplace done with brickwork etc with a mantle/surround.

Do you really need an insert (cast iron or other) or can a neat job with bricks be done?

Cheers for any advice

It all depends. If you intend lighting a fire, then a proper fire-back must be inserted and connected to the flue, surround and hearth with fireclay; if all you want is a non-functional decorative thingy, then ordinary bricks are fine.

You will need a fireback anyway, heat resistant cement to seal it where it meets the insert .Broken bricks, rocks or sand to put down the back and sides of the fireback. regular cement to slope the top of the fire back to the flue. Again , seal any gaps with firecement.

Make sure the flue is in good order.
