Well, after the World Cup we don't have to listen to the constant media drone about either Ronaldo or Messi.

Folks, ain't this heaven !

I see it more as the twilight of the Gods.
Two of the greatest footballers I ever saw live The day saturation coverage of their exploits ceases will be a sad day indeed .

Ronaldo wouldn't lace the boots of his namesake from Brazil.

Nor could Messi drive a team forward like Passarella nor orchestrate the forwards around him like Maradona.

Actually, I enjoyed most of the KO stage bar the 3rd place game and the lousy final.

I had no skin in the game for the Final. Best team to win - though I like my bit of excitement and the prospect of a swarm of wild Buenos Aireans carrying all ahead of them (especially BBC woman reporters) to Maradona's house was always something you won't get this side of the Atlantico . . .:(

Football has moved on since Passarella and the Brazilian Ronaldo finished playing and it’s a bit difficult to compare players from different generations ., Passarella retired 37 years ago & Ronaldo 18 years ago and football has changed drastically in the interim I saw Passarella who was a wonderful centre half live once & Messi & the Portuguese Ronaldo live on several occasions and all made huge impacts on me .
I saw Maradona on 4 occasions including his last 2 games for Argentina at USA 1994 when he fell foul of the drug testers .
All wonderful players and all World class.
As a matter of interest I don’t think the original Ronaldo can now see his own laces never mind tie them

Well there is no better man than yourself Deiseblue to be able to compare them all having seeing them live ....I had the pleasure of seeing all of them from about ten feet...... That's as close as I chose to be .....from the telly ...

El Kaiser would walk into any team in the world right now, defence or midfield - or both as he used to do. Christ he'd nearly be in any team for penalties and free-kicks.

Ditto for Maradona and The Ronaldo. I suppose you're alluding to Ronaldo's weight trouble. A lot of ex-players have that problem.

Absolutely , Passarella , Maradona , Ronaldo all brilliant footballers of their era .
Messi and Ronaldo brilliant players coming to the end of stellar careers obviously in quite a different era .
Comparisons are a bit challenging given that all five are different types of players playing at different developing stages of the game .

Very hard to compare players from the past with players of the present.....George Best , Bobby Charlton , Denis Law, Bobby Moore. The Brazilian teams back then with Pele, Rivellino, Tostao Jairzhino,...to name some. European players like Beckenbaur, Muller, ...Cruyff to name but a few.. . .only some of the fantastic players some may remember , spelling might be iffy at best.
Just can't compere them with the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Modric....Mbappe, Lamel....
No point in trying either..

Is it because as players they need to take alot of calories as burning off so much energy .Also injuries sustained during playing careers makes exercising in retirement much harder. At least professional football players get hugely compensated for that. The poor old GAA players having to pay for and deal with old injuries from their playing days and they never received any pay for it. You see so many crocked and overweight former gaa players in their 40s and 50s with chronic bad knees and hips
