hi there,

A friend has a house with an extention on the side which is a garage and they are looking to convert it to a kitchen. Will he need planning permission to move the kitchen in and should it be a certain height.

thanks

Hello Pink

Refer to Statutory Instrument No. 181 0f 2000, Local government (Planning and Development) regulations where "the extension of a dwelling house....by the conversion of any garage or store...to the rear or side of the dwelling house" does not require planning permission. There are some conditions, your local authority planning department will give you a copy of the legislation, its only 5 pages long and not that complicated. You need a minimum floor to ceiling height of 2.4m in any habitable room, plus adequate ventilation where cooking is concerned.
