Extending gable wall

I am about to convert attic space ,now due to hipp roof and that means having to take about 2 ft of a box room which is already to small.I am now going to try for planning permission to build up gable by about 6 blocks,this would enable me to keep box room as it is There is a house in my estate that already got PP to replace exsisting hipp with a full apex roof,
As I want to do the PP myself to keep costs down and it is a straight forward job,is there any advice there to help me fill out PP form,
or is there anything else I need to know.
Also thinking of building first then lookin gfor retention later,

Straightforward? Building up a wall might be fairly straightforward, but the roofing job sure ain't.

Stick to the legal route, and apply for PP first.
