A friend of mine has returned from Canada and was asking me about the tax implications. I told him that he would need specialist tax advice.

I thought it would be useful to compile a list of advisors in Ireland who are familiar with the tax rules in different countries.

So if you have any names to add, please do so.

Marc Westlake of Global Wealth offers a specialist investment service:

Moving To Ireland Consulting Service

Working with tax-consultants we can advise you how to structure your assets before moving to Ireland and in particular before becoming tax resident. As an ex-pat himself, and having made the move from the UK to Ireland for family reasons, [broken link removed] is exceptionally well-placed to consult in this area.

Our specialist niche, is advising non-domiciled families and individuals moving to or living in Ireland to assist them in taking advantage of the favourable tax treatment of investment portfolios subject to the remittance basis of taxation. Note that we aim to restructure an existing portfolio prior to becoming Irish tax resident so forward planning is important. Restructuring after moving to Ireland is also possible but may be more complex or less effective.

DG International Tax is a firm of Chartered Accountants based in Kilkenny which specialises in International Tax.

It offers "a range of services to Irish, UK, European and US clients, specialising in tax compliance / advice to clients with dual or foreign tax obligations eg in Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the UK, USA and more"

I have known its owner Brid Doherty since studying with her back in the day. I have referred some contacts to her over the years for help with foreign tax returns and feedback has always been good.

Any of the big firms can offer advice. Even a lot of small to medium size firms have international partnerships. Cooney Carey in Sandyford are part of the Russell Bedford network, so if they don't know the answer, they can get it from people in their network. HLB Sheehan Quinn is another firm in Sandyford who are part of HLB Global, which is another network of firms around the world.

Tommy - that is an excellent resource.

Hi Steven - I would never send an individual - other than a High Net Worth Individual - to a big firm.

www.Expattaxes.ie has also been recommended to me.

I have to say that I really like their clarity about pricing. A lot of people are nervous about contacting professionals on the grounds that there is a minimum charge for some simple questions.

This is very helpful, thank you. I was actually planning to ask a question about recommendations. Very timely.

Hi Midtown
If you use one of the recommended advisors, you might come back and let us know how you get on.
Thanks
Brendan

We've used Richard Dunn of taxamerican.com to file US tax returns for us with the last few years. I would recommend him.

Hi Brendan,

It depends how much is involved and the level of complexity.

KTA are an excellent firm with very good affiliates in the main jurisdictions.

Going to Big Four is naive as you’ve rightly highlighted. But so is going to taxrefund.org.ie.com
