Expansion Gaps When Tiling

Tiling on floor with inderfloor heating.

Can someone explain what is the story with expansion joints

The area is question is 4.6m x 6.58m

I wouldn't have thought that expansion joints would be necessary with a tiled floor; a wooden floor, yes, as the wood will expand/contract with heat, but surely tiles don't.

I'd be interested in any view to the contrary, together with the rationale behind it.
 
My tiler insists on putting small pieces of cut tiles in doorways as expansions slots. He does a lovely job of it.
 
I'm about to have tiles laid on top of underfloor heating in my house and I was told that we have to use flexible adhesive and we have bought BAL Admix which is flexible additive for the grout so the tiles can move with the heat.

I was aware of the need to have flexible adhesive but a flexible additive for the grout is a new one
thanks for that,
 
Yeah, I've had grout crack on me several times because this wasn't added :(
