Exhaust Emission for 2001 Opel Zafira

The "Control Indicator for Exhaust Emissions" on th edash of our Zafira lit up yesterday and remains lit up. The mnual says that it indicates a fault in the emissions control and that permissible limits may be exceeded. Ayone hazard a guess as to how much it would cost (in Dublin) to have this repaired? Do I have to go to Opel dealer. Is this a common problem with Zafiras?

I am amazed that this happened because our other car is a 9 year Almera which showed in its last NCT that its emissions were less than 10% of threshold.

PS - does this need to be fixed urgently (i.e. is it causing damage to the car aslwell as environment)?
