Anyone know how many rows and columns in the there are in later versions of Excel? I am using Excel 2000 which only has 256 columns, too small for what I do.

Maybe you should consider a different solution (like a database), if you need more than 256 columns.

I'll second that - I'd have gone the database route long before reaching 256 columns, but not Access.

I need the graphical and macro functions of Excel - can these be replicated on a database?

Most modern databases can replicate graphical and other functionality directly or with links to spreadsheet applications like Excel. An example is FileMaker Pro which is available as 30-day trial download. It can import the data and column-names directly from Excel, one discrete record per Excel row.

So why would | use two applications instead of one?

What about trying openoffice.org - it's Sun's Free version of MS Office, it might not have that 256 column restriction and it also has its own database software...

Old dog, new tricks.... I'm used to Excel by now and will probably stick with it. Other than that I would seriously consider OpenOffice. Thanks.
