ETF's vs Funds

I've just recently sold a house and now have a pretty good nest egg of approx 100k to invest with a view to decent capital returns over the next 5 years. At the moment I think it will pretty much be "buy and hold" for the duration.

I went to a "financial advisor" during the week and I was surprised by the fact that he just suggested I invest in about 5 funds (through him of course, with his 50% of his commission given back to me). The service he provides was just selling me the funds (most with a 5 year lock-in mechanism) and then an annual meeting to discuss progress. 1.5% a year in management fees.

I would like to invest in ETFs myself instead - has anyone ever invested in both ETFs and funds? Would a have just as good a chance getting decent returns by buying and holding ETFs rather than funds?
