Entitlements after accident

Hi All,

I was wondering if someone could provide me with some helpful information specific to my situation.

I had an accident in late April which involved moderate brain trauma.

I'm well on my way to recovery but am on the waiting list for Dun Laoire National Rehab hospital.

Obviously I'm not at work and won't be for the foreseeable future. However, since I am only receiving a basic pay package (50% of my OTE) and have to hand over any sick pay entitlements to my employer, I was wondering if someone could please detail or suggest any other entitlements which I could claim for? My VHI pay my medical bills. I haven't claimed for anything else. Am I entitled to any tax rebate or anything?

Any assistance is much appreciated. Please excuse any mistakes.

Hi, Did your accident happen at work? if so you can apply for industrial injury benefit. My accident involved Brain injury like you and I now recieve benefit. As I understand it, by recieving industrial injury benefit, this also entitles you to DHSS benefits which are related to severety of injury recieved.

Thanks for the responses and sorry for the delay in getting back. I am not UK-based but I have been resident and working in Ireland for over 9 years. I am Irish. The accident happened in my own home whereby I fell backwards downstairs. Dun Laoire assessed the severity of the injury and classed it as moderate due to multiple skull fractures and 4 to 5 days memory loss. The accident occured in mid April but I've just been receiving my basic monthly wage and paying the illness benefit to my employer.

Am I entitled to anything else at all? Is there any specialist in this area who may be able to help me determine whether I em entitled to any further payments? I have a mortgage and bills to pay so I'm trying to keep on top of those before I have to attend Dun Laoire as an in-patient.
Can anyone provide any helpful information please?

From a SW point of view, you are getting your full entitlement through Illness Benefit, which is taxable.

OK, that's fine, thanks for the confirmation. Now after June, my circumstances will change a little when a specific insurance policy (which the company that I work for has) kicks in, PHI (Permanent Health Insurance) or Income Protection. It will reduce my basic pay by 33% but I'll still be paying the illness benefit to the company.

Does this affect my SW entitlements at all? Is there anything I can do to help decrease my outgoings and increase my income (apart from the very obvious)?

Your SW Illness Benefit amount stays the same; it's based on PRSI contributions and not means-tested.

Thanks Welfarite but whether my illness benefit goes sky-high or decreases to nothing doesn'y matter as I just hand it over to my employer anyway.
