I have a pending claim. My car insurer says that they will pay any garage that does the work directly. Can I insist that they send me a cheque and that I can pay the cost myself? If assessor agrees that the damage to my car is x euro, should I be able to claim, get the cheque for x euro and then live with the damage on my car? I can then use it to pay the hikes in the premium. There is a 3rd party involved. They could try to claim against me at some point so I'm trying to avoid taking the premium hit.
