My Father who is now 56 has been working since he was 13 as a mechanic and when he turned 20 he opened his own small country garage and ran a repair business servicing local cars and tractors.
He was never registered for vat and was always paid in cash but now he said that business is so slow and people do not seem to be paying their bills he will shut down the garage.
He has never paid or claimed anything to welfare ever so no pris paid or nothing ever claimed?
My mother does not work either and has never claimed anything off anyone.
Would he be entitled to anything off social and when he goes what will he be asked?

Surely he has a nest egg put away for himself for a situation like this. You can not expect not to contribute to the tax/prsi system and then after years (43 of them) of taking cash in hand look for something in return. I would be cautious that they don't come after him with a tax bill - after all they will want to know what he has been living of for all these yrs.

No nest egg or no saving at all. just made enough to keep fod on the table and a holiday a year.

For the last 20 years my parents have lived on a claim my mother got after being ran into and being in hospital for a year and left with a disabality.

He can claim Jobseeker's Allowance, which is means-tested if he satisfies the conditions of being available for and genuinely seeking work.

Interesting point this.
There are probably lots of people out there who scrambled a 'cash' liviing without being formally in the tax system, and probably earning below taxable levels of income.
Like as in his case, how do the revenue respond when he suddenly comes into the system either as jobseeker or OAP.
Will he not be slapped with a huge assessment?

Revenue are not involved in Jobseekers' or OAP claims. Sw would do means test and satisfy themselves as to earnigns history. If they felt that there was fraud regarding tax issues, then they would report the matter to Revenue for their own investigation.
