Where proceedings have been served, the defendant has a certain length of time to say to the Court that they are going to deal with the proceedings, and do so either personally or via a nominated solicitor. This is called entering an appearance. Depending on the proceedings, if an appearance is not entered, the plaintiff may be able to obtain judgement against the defendant without going into court.
