a friend has just informed me that his employer wants to see a copy of his ICB report as part of 'security' checks. Am I correct in believing this is completely out of line?? How on earth could an employer ask for such personal information?????

Prospective employers can ask to see garda checks, employment references, character references, exam results, passports and even medical information..

Credit checks aren't a huge stretch. Certain occupations require the employee to have a good financial standing so that they can't be seen to be corruptible -susceptible to bribery or theft.

But if your friend is an existing employee and this is coming out of nowhere.. I'd nearly be tempted to tell the employer to take a hike.

It may depend on the nature of the Employment?

If the job is in financial services and focuses on advising customers. If your ICB report shows you cannot manage your own financial state then would you be in the correct position to advise others?

Can see why they would bother.

If one was the fake the results the employer would have no way of finding out.

What is the nature of his job? If he has excessive debt,he could be be open open to bribery. Might be understandable in the secure cash transit business,as there have been cases of inside information being part of robberies.

Other than that, its none of the employers business.
