Hi

Our youngest started work recently and has got paid but emergency tax applies.
How can he sort this out ?
(He has set up revenue account).
Can the claim a refund for the emergency tax paid ?

Thanks

Would he need too call revenue too sort his tax credits or would it be sorted automatically?

He input the employers details into his Ros online.
If his employment is now registered with Revenue and his standard rate and credits are allocated to it on a cumulative basis then he'll be refunded any overpayment of tax from 2022 when his employer acts on the latest RPN issued to them.

On his account it says pending.
Will revenue send the employer a RPN ? Is that normal ?

Thanks
I can't recall the specific details, but when I switched jobs circa 5 years ago I remember logging onto to my revenue online account to confirm my new employer and tax credits. Either none were listed under my new employer or the details were incorrect. I rang the Revenue and informed them of my new employer/salary and they updated the info there and then. I managed to avoid emergency tax.

Maybe just get your youngest to call the Revenue? They really are very helpful these days.

I think it is up to the employer to download the employee's RPN - some will do this every pay cycle and some will do it whenever they feel the need

When did he register the job? And can he see his version of the RPN (tax credit certificate) in his documents section of his MyAccount?
He registered on the 4th and the employer details as well as his first payment is on his revenue profile.

He will call revenue today.

this will give him the right number to call

Depending on the employer, his payslip may have been prepared a day or two in advance, so that the payroll staff may not have had time to process his RPN.

Hopefully all is order but it's probably a case that the employer hasn't applied the new RPN as of yet it's only been a few days. I'd imagine if it's in order then the employer will download the RPN for the next payroll.

Thanks folks.
He has gotten a new tax certificate from revenue on his Ros account so I’m assuming this will be the set up from revenue all sorted for him.

Just look at the tax cert and see if it says cumulative or week 1 - if it's cumulative he should get the tax back when he next gets paid but if he's on week 1 basis he can claim it back in January.

It doesn’t say either.
It just shows his tax cut off point etc.
How can one make a claim in January ??

Although it says the cert is from start date till 31 December 2022.

There would be an asterisk beside the employment on page 2 and a line at the bottom of page 2 saying the the cert is in a week 1 or emergency tax basis. If that's not there then that means that the cert has been issued on the normal cumulative basis so all should be good.

Every PAYE taxpayer should get in the habit of filing a return online via their Revenue MyAccount at the end of every tax year to ensure they were taxed correctly, declare any additional non PAYE income and/or claim additional tax credits/reliefs. The instructions on what to do are in the link below. A little bit of reading involved but there are videos to show you what to do.
