A guy wants to transfer funds into my bank account as payment for a motorbike that I am selling. He is Irish. I have met him face to face and seems like a nice lad. I just dont feel right about handing over my bank account number to a stranger.
Am I being over cautious?

No, I think you are right. I would be very wary of giving my bank account number to anyone.

I can't see any problem in giving you bank account number and sort code. This is all that is needed to transfer money IN to an account.

No money can be withrawn with just these details.

Anyone who writes a cheque automatically gives out these details.

No problem on providing the basic information to allow him to do an electronic transfer. As already stated it is all on a cheque.
However....be very careful. If he transfers money in electronically, do not release the motorbike until the money HAS CLEARED.
He could lodge a cheque to your account (especially one drawn on a non-irish bank) which would appear on your statement. However if the cheque subsequently bounces the money would be withdrawn.
Foreign cheques can take 10 days to clear.
