Given the current economic situation has anyone got any ideas for an electrician looking to expand their range of skills or train-up? Something part time ideally to help keep the employment situation afloat in times to come.

A mate of mine is a qualfied electrician but went on to study electronics/design (i think) and has never looked back. He swapped a tool bag for a laptop. I'll chat with him and give you details.

I think the question is what would you like to do? An Electrical trade is proberly the single best avenue trade to have . It can lead you in anyone of several directions. You should think about what you would like to do and see how your previous experience can be benificial here?

I've been looking at a place in the UK (recommended by another AAMer for Tiling) - ableskills.co.uk - would entail heading to the UK and I don't know what they are like for advancing skills (as opposed to teaching the uninitiated, which is what I'm looking for)

its not that I don't want to work in the electrical anymore I was thinking along the lines of having a plan B when work is scarce. Ive been a self employed contractor doing mostly domestic wiring since qualifying. I was looking for some areas where I could expand my range of offerings or train some more to give me more employment options now. Maybe short term courses or night courses

Hi Paddyboy99, you stated that the electrical trade was the most valuable to have, any more ideas on kinds of suitable jobs to search for, even part time would be a help at the moment.
I've been working in domestic installations for the past few years

I'd definitely look at the renewables sector if I were you; many plumbing and mechanical contractors are specialising in this and there are bound to be opportunities for electricians who are familiar with the technologies and what they entail. I know of many good plumbers who can't price some new build work now because they haven't yet got the knowledge in these emerging fields. Some training and linking in with two or three mechanical contractors with expertise would be a good starting point.

Anyone know where training for this is available and if its expensive?

Check out FAS, I think I got some post from them recently regarding courses. they were offering money off, not sure if that applies to everyone. Expect to pay up to €1300 for some renewable courses.
