Electric lights not working

Strange one this…

I turned on an overhead electric light last week, which came on, flickered and then died. I assume it was the bulb, but lo and behold it started working again (simple turn off and back on again seemed to work)…

…until over the weekend, when the same thing happened to the same light. All of the upstairs lights, bathroom fans etc. went this time, but started working again a few hours later.

Yes, I’ve checked the bulbs, and no, the switches in the fuse box are all still up…

…any ideas? There's been no work done in the house recently so why would this suddenly start after 5 years?

I range an electrician but he said it would need to be not working for him to investigate it.
 
There is a bad connection somewhere,probably a looped live or neutral at the original problem light fitting.
 
Sounds like a bad connection, you should get checked at once could be a fire hazard and lights do not have to be notworking for an electrican to check the fault
 
you would need to get an electrician to look at this problem. If you have a bad connection, it could be the cause, but be aware bad connections can cause fires. Do get an electrician in .
 
Yes, I got an electrician. Who very strangely rang several more electricians and they all crowded round it, scratched their heads, tested lots of things, and demanded much tea.

Eventually the conclusion was something to do with a mix up between the back feed of neutral and live, and two circuit breakers replaced and 350 euro later they departed.

I do feel safer!
 
Can I ask you how long it took them to come to this conclusion, i am not so sure about the conclusion they came up with sounds strange to me why you shoud have to change two breakers??
 
It took about eight hours, and they said it was all they could think of doing.

no porblems since anyway, but given that they 'forgot' the receipt book and 'forgeot' to drop back the receipt I am a little suspicious.
 
OMG - €350 for a connection !!!

I had the same thing happen a few months ago. Electrician came out & did say it could be tricky to track these things down, but started with the obvious. Like you, I'd had no work done just beofre, so he reckoned it could be a faulty wire somewhere & if the wire isn't obvious he would have to look at tracking each one. Checked each light fitting & the very last one has a loose wire. He was as delighted as I was....especially as it only cost about €50!
 
actually to be fair he replaced the bathroom globe light as well which has been regularly blowing - apparently it was only a 40 watt fitting.
