During the summer my father transferred his Glanbia shares to me. Just under 5000 shares with a transferred value of approx. 61,500. These shares were all accumulated over the years from his association with Dungarvan co-op initially. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to piece together when exactly they were given to him i.e. their exact provenance. I'd imagine this has all happened before to others but could anyone here advise will Glanbia have that information if we contact them?
And if now, how would we best calculate his CGT liability on something like that?
Thank you.

Capital gain = value at disposal €61,500 less cost of acquisition.

It seems that it's the cost of acquisition that you are trying to establish.

Your father is the best person to know this. Did he keep records?

He tells me he didn't pay for any of them. So would have been earned I guess as part of a creamery milk deal. Vague. There's a file to find & go through. I've a feeling I won't be able to figure it all out & it's so long ago he won't remember the finer detail. I'll ring glanbia tmor & see where we go.

Could you reconfirm if they Glanbia PLC shares or Tirlan Co-op shares?
If they are plc shares they are likely arising from the various spin offs over the years...both Glanbia & Tirlan shares office would have this information. Tirlan hold pop up clinics every once and a while to assist.
