Dual control central heating

Purchasing new build house and builder has to finish oil central heating. House spread over 3 floors. planning on putting stove in living room to heat downstairs. Should I be asking the builder to install a control so that i can turn off tthe heating on the other two floors? Any idea what system is required and how much extra this will cost?

Every floor should have it's own heating zone that would be controlled by a room thermostat and a switch to shut down zone. you will need radiators on ground floor. This is the norm and make sure it is part of the original price on your heating.

Your home would have four zones. one for each floor and a hot water only option (for summer time use, when you don't need the heating on for radiators) Each zone should be controlled by a thermostat. three room stats and one cylinder stat.

Horstmann do a 4 channel programmer which should be perfect for the job. Get it in writing from the builder exactly what will be installed regarding control. It can be got for €130 online from the UK or a lot more than that from your local heat_merchant. The three heating channels should have stats or TRV valves fitted to the rads.

By regulation the plumber is obliged to provide two zones and 1 hot water control in houses over 1000 sq feet - (this changed in 2008 by amended regulations but it was all in general terms as it states two zones should generally be adequte). They will do this in the cheapest way possible so don't just have a verbal agreement that you will get three zones, three zones worked off three different clocks or manual levers would be a pain.
