Drive In cobblelock 50 mm or 60 mm

Hi , We are currently thinking of getting our driveway cobbled. We have had a few quotes and was wondering should we go for 50mm or 60 mm tegula bricks. Is 50 mm sufficient for driving 2 to 3 cars in. Would just love some opinions

Squire is correct the thicker you go the better for Traffic areas, if you carry the paving down the side of your house you can swutch to 50mm to cut down on the cost. also do make sure they use the right paving grit for drainage.

see www.paving.org.uk for further information, with regards the depth of paving, personaly I would use 50mm. The compressive strenght of paving(tobbermore or Acheson-Glover) is very high. The are you plan to pave is for light traffic only so 50mm is fine.

More important is the correct laying course(40mm - 50mm sand) and sub-base of clause 804, well compacted.

It is also very very important that the correct edge restraints are used, such bedding your edge brick/cobble/kerb on 1:3 cement & sand mortar bed laid on in-situ concrete haunching.

thanks a million everyone for taking the time to reply , really appreciate it, will prob go for the 60mm as there's not a huge difference in the price.

Both good and well made points but I would always go for the heavier brick where there is even the slightest chance that someday a heavy truck will need to park in your driveway. (Moving house or having something delivered).

The best of luck with it, would you mind letting me know what you expect to pay per m2 for the 60mm preparation, supply and installation?
