Have a pc and wondered how easy it is to download and save movies on a cd, was thinking of xmas ones for the kids...has anyone any siteds were this can be down..I have heard mention of torrents? ..is this correct..?
 
It is fairly easy these days to download films illegally, including ones that are still in the cinema.

But you will struggle to get ones that are of decent quality. There are a lot of bad quality files out there on the net, and downloading of high quality ones can take quite a while.

Also be careful about downloading childrens films. Heard reports in the past of kids films having porn clips included in the middle. I know this is sad but there are sick people out there, and you are hardly going to sit and watch every film you download first just to check it, are you?

Good god I'm shocked! all I wanted was Santa Claus the movie...

I agree - while I'm not sure how widespread it is one of the problems with downloading movies from the net, from peer to peer sites anyway, is that you are trusting the people that uploaded the movie in the first place to be honest - ultimately all you have to go on is the file name which is irrelevant - I could upload "Debbie Does Dallas" to emule and call the file "Dallas Home Movie" and you wouldn't know the content until you downloaded the whole thing and watched it :eek: !.......allegedly!!

There are sites out there where you can download full movies for a fee like www.mvlib.com or www.flixdump.com but you would have to do some research to see how legit or reliable these sites are - I haven't used either of them so can't comment.
 
Youtube is just as bad - was watching some kiddy clip at the weekend with my youngster and in the middle of the clip, some idiot screamed into the camera - I jumped out of my skin, kid found it funny and wanted to see it again!

This can usually be combatted by downloading movies from a specific group. Or just buying the movie.

You can preview videos from emule to see if it is legit. Also you would look at what other people are calling the file name when you start the download, this will give you some idea as to the content, If the filename changes between each user it is normally spam.
 
I would say that if you only want Santa Claus The Movie you would be better going out and buying it.

IT would be a lot less hassle and I would say you could pick it up very cheaply anyway.
 
If you're a Sky Movies subscriber, download Sky Anytime from their site and you can legally download movies to your PC.

Back on topic, sort of; does anyone know how the quality of downloaded movies compares to rips direct from DVD's? (assuming both legitimately purchased in the same format ie PAL/NTSC).

And, is there any difference in quality between ripped movies played via pc / media centre / hard drive and those played directly from dvd?

I'm just wondering would it be worth it, quality wise, to rip all my dvd's to a drive and henceforth buy online only from a legit source ie SKY anytime or legit websites?
 
Just wondering...is it possible to download movies in low resolution which are suitable for say the iPod, Creative etc that only have a screen that's a few inches in size? With such a screen, there's little point is downloading a 700MB file....

You want to download mp4 movies for that. If a download isnt available in mp4 format, take it fown in whatever format you can and convert using many tools available online.

Most downloaded movies come from dvds in the first place. And are converted to MPEG-4 with a Divx/Xvid video codec. Which is basically compressed video.
But if you mean what are MPEG-4 vides like compared to playing a dvd, the dvd is better quality although it's hard to notice sometimes.

If you rip a dvd to your pc/media c./or other hdd it will not be better or worse quality that playing a dvd. But you will need a large hard drive to fit all the movies on it. Bear in mind that a movie you download from the internet can be 700-1400MB in size whereas a dvdr (dvdrip) can be from 4000-9000MB.

This can take hours and the aspect ratio and lip sync sometimes get messed up big time.
