Double glaze single windows?

Saw an ad in the local paper advertising turning existing aliminium single windows into double glazing. Anyone have any experience or views on this?

I need to do something about the windows in my house as they radiate cold and particularly in my two kids' rooms, but I can't afford to do the whole house.

What's the best way forward (other than wasting my pennies on the lotto!).

To put double glazing into aluminia frames is a waste of money . Aluminia is a bad insulator , and plastic window frames cost very little. If you do just the two in the kids room that won't cost the world. Try to get the best available in terms of insulation properties , you might save enough on fuel and renovation costs and antibiotics ( condensation ! ) to finance in one or two years the next set . Talk to your window maker , may be they accept payment by installments . Good luck .

tks for that comment heinbloed. When you say 'plastic window frames' are you talking about PVC?

Yes. But I'm not saying these are better than timber frames , it is just cheaper to purchase them.
