What percentage of income (or other formula) do people use to determine the amount they give to support the religion they belong to or to decide the amount they donate to their choosen charity?

How long is a peice of string...it depends on personal circumstances and how close to hand to mouth you are living.
I try to give 5% of net income but then again I pay tax as well and much of that goes to helping others.
