Domestic well pump stopped working. Tripped switch

We have our own domestic well with pump. The pump itself is located in a boiler house, and the system is linked to a pressure tank & water softener system. The whole thing was inherited from previous owner, and I'm not 100% on what is being powered from where; ie there is a single plugged cable running from pump, and another cable coming from pump which seems to go to the pressure gauge on our pressure tank, which may be an earth?

This evening I noticed that there was no water coming from the kitchen tap so went to investigate, and found that the the sockets in the boiler house were dead, and that the electrical circuit switch was down. I unplugged everything including our oil boiler, however the switch will not stay up when I try.

I now have the heating back on having run an extension cable into the boiler house to supply power, but the pump has not come back on even when I plug it onto the same extension cable. I've changed what fuse in the plug, and on the single fuse box attached to the sockets, but no joy.

I am left (I think) with the conclusion that the pump is the source of the problem. I should also have said that - prior to tonight - we have noticed that an increasing timelag between turning on cold taps and water flowing, as if there has been a problem with the pressure tank.

Sorry for the long story. I suppose the first thing I'm asking of anyone with experience, is does my conclusion seem correct, that the pump is the issue? And secondly, who should I call; is it a plumber or electrician, or some kind of hybrid specialist?

Thanks,
Michael.

What part of the country are you in - have a number for domestic pump servicing & repairs in you are in the Cork area?
Have you had the pump serviced since moving in? Could be a number of issues to be honest, pump failure / blown circuit / short in the wiring ...

And secondly, who should I call; is it a plumber or electrician, or some kind of hybrid specialist?

Usually water well pump maintenance is done by a local guys specialising in this kind of work.

Ask your neighbours who they use and you will get a list of 2 or 3 guys.

Some of them are multi skilled plumber/electrician/water treatment specialists or they work closely with an electrician used to well water pumps / domestic water treatment systems.

The often provide services to your local dairy farmers whose business depends on good clean water in quantity.

There is often a listing in the Golden Pages.

As an aside you should be checking your water quality every couple of years or so. Check for Biological, Chemical and Metals and adjust your water treatment system accordingly.

Pressure Vessels often fail after about 7 years and need to be replaced.

Folks,

Thanks for the advice on this. I decided to call a local "Mr Fix-it" guy who has helped me in the past with all sorts of jobs. He called out and immediately set to work isolating various pieces of the electric jigsaw one at a time to find the root of the problem. Turns out the issue is the blower in my septic tank has gone kaput. I hadn't really considered this, having changed it just a few years ago at a cost of €420!
Anyway, my well pump has no problem and is back working fine again. Mind you, now I have a different, slightly less urgent problem to deal with.

Thanks again.
