Dogs in Town Housing Estates

Would like to know , if all breeds of dogs are allowed in town housing estates , or are there specific breeds that are banned ?
 
AFAIK this is the only blanket ban on specific breeds being mooted in this country - [broken link removed]

The dog in question here is a cross-breed Bull-Mastiff and another .

I wonder is this confined to DCC / do all local town councils have their own policy.
 
is the dog aggressive ,is it allowed to roam free or is it just that you dont like the look of it?

AFAIK - whatever about housing provided by dublin city council, it is not currently illegal to own any breed of dog, but it may be illegal to walk certain breeds in public, and there are restrictions around how some breeds must be presented in public (muzzle on the so called 'dangerous' breeds).

Technically it is illegal for any dog to be off leash in public except in designated dog parks.

Is this dog roaming freely, showing aggression, any cause for concern?

If you feel there is an issue with the owner controlling the dog in public where it lives you can make a report to the local Dog Warden.
 
Certain dogs are restricted breeds, among them Bullmastiffs and any dog crossed with this breed.

"Restricted" means that the dog must be muzzled when out in public, and walked on a leash that is no longer than 2 metres, by someone aged over 16 who is capable of controlling the dog. The dog must also wear identification on its collar.

My neighbour has a Bullmastiff and I swear I have never come across a more gentle, obedient dog. My little westie is absolutely wild in comparison!

One of my neighbours has one with a lovely soft temperment as well, however with any dog the only matter of importance to others is : has the owner got the dog under control, whether or not the dog has a good temperment.

I have to say, my neighbour has no control over his bull mastiff and walks seem to consist of the owner screaming himself blue in the face while the dog totally ignores him and wanders off doing his own thing. The dog is lovely, but totally his own boss. I imagine conversations in the dogs head as being 'ah yeah, this is the fella who holds the door open for me and then likes to shout his head off while I have my walk, strange humans....'.
 
Personally, I fail to understand why Bullmastiffs are on that list. True, they are powerful dogs, but they are also extremely placid - ours is a big old softie who likes nothing better than to curl up in a little ball beside us on the couch. I would add a few other breeds to that list myself - mainly of the small, yappy type with needle-sharp teeth that they aren't afraid to use on humans!

The conversations the small yappy types are having are something like this:
'get back, get back, its my pack, im in charge, im protecting this human, get away, stop that, dont you dare come any nearer, my human needs me to protect them, im the boss, back, back, back!!!'.

Whereas the conversations that dogs SHOULD be having should be as follows:
'yeah, just enjoying my walk, oops, shouldnt have tried to pull ahead there, im a good boy really, oh theres a person, what does my pack leader think, oh he is relaxed so it must be ok, ill just carry on sniffing about...'.
 
I ahve a neighbour with 2 dogs that bark all day long. Can I do anything about this?

You can
(a) approach your neighbour and ask can anything be done.
(b) complain to your local authority about noise pollution
(c) make a report to the local SPCA if you feel the dogs are being ill treated (example, are they stuck in a confined space and not walked frequently enough?)
 
All your local authority can do is give you an application form to make a complaint to the District court under the Control of Dogs Act, they have no powers as yet to do anything else about noise from dogs barking.
 
the control of dogs act is a rally flawed piece of work, a lot of the dogs on it are there based on there looks rather than there propensity for a aggression,in most of the breeds on the list are on the opposite of ot the scale of dogs most likely to bite.it was just another knee jerk piece of legislation to appease the joe duffy brigade.
