do we really need tilt and turn windows?

We've been told by a sales rep that due to the size of a few of our windows we wil have to put in some tilt and turn windows as opposed to casement windows in order to meet regulations. We're really not gone on tilt and turn and were wondering if anyone knows if there is an alternative or if we must go with them.

firstly, no... you do not have to go with tilt and turn.

if you want casement windows, then go to a company who can do this for you....

if a sales rep told me his company couldnt do what i wanted, i know what id be telling him!!!

We had the same from some companies and had no problem with a competent rep who actually called to veiw the house before quoting. Our windows are huge. You just need to break them into sections, we have a large square bay and in this case both side windows open but not the front window. All windows are divided into 3 sections for uniformity and it looks well imo.

Tilt and turn are a nightmare if you want blinds, our neighbour ended up with 56 roller blinds in their house as each section of window needed it's own blind!!

PM me if you want the reps name that we used. We are in Cork and went with a well established company. Like all companies it's often down to the individual rep on how practical and accomodating they are even in the current climate.

I had a similiar experience i.e. if the window went over a certain size then casement was no longer an option and I would have to go with the tilt and turn type.
I was told at the time (as far as I can recall) that the reason was that the casement type hinge has a certain load bearing limit which is less than the tilt and turn type. So I guess when you exceed a certain size window then casement is a non runner. I also guess that the supplier has to factor in their multi year warranty as well in to this.

In the end I down sized a little. (but did have to go for 1 t&t (in a oddball area as it happens)

It may also be to do with fire regs - when we renovated our house, one of our windows had to be T&T in order to provide a fire escape.

its a little incorrect to say it had to be tilt and turm to comply with the regs..... it would be more correct to say that the window manufacturer had to construct a tilt and turn window in order to comply with the regs.

The regs are quite simple.... a clear unobstructed opening must be avaliable in order to escape.. .some manufacturers can do this in casement... some can do it in sash... others need tilt and turm to comply...
