Hi
Maybe someone can advise
I am in receipt of a monthly payment from a Permanent Health Insurance Scheme through my pension scheme at work. I have a long term illness and have been unable to work since early 2009. My PHI claim has been accepted by the insurance company and i am now due a backdated payment from the insurance company since April 2009.
I have been asessed by the local area Health officer and granted a Primary Medical Certificate. I am claiiming Illness benefit at the moment and have to hand in Certs every 6 months to Social Welfare from my doctor.
My question is do I have to pay PRSI and the Health Levy on the payment from my PHI Claim? or can i avoid having to pay this as my employer seems to be getting mixed answers from Revenue.
They say If i was on invalidity pension i do not have to pay but am not on it yet as normally have to wait 12 months before applying. If i do not have to pay this I can save a large amount of money on the back dated payment and also going forward as my PHI claim will be paid monthly. My PHI Claim is paid to my employer from the insurance company and they in turn pay me. If i was paid this directly (from insurance company to me) what the revenue call an "approved scheme" they say i could avoid having to pay the PRSI...not sure about the health levy.. or i have to get classsed as a DNRA (do not refer again) case.
Any advice much appreciated
