DJ Carey How did he get away with it for so long?

I’m mystified… possibly because I’m not a GAA fan?

But if an acquaintance asked me for money for cancer treatment I’d be very reluctant.

Friend or family… yeah I’d probably help. But someone I met at an event a decade ago? Not a cat in hells chance. A lift to hospital maybe, walk a dog while they were away for treatment.. sure… hard cash.. nope!

Did he spend the money or is it stashed away overseas? And is there more than the €400k ish mentioned on TV last night?

Apparently he lost a heap of money in the property market collapse apparently having listened to various exhortations to dive in headlong and that it could never go wrong.

He had a high profile at fund-raising events and as a paid fund-raiser for various charities and met the great and the good at those and other events as well as fanatical Kilkenny/DJ supporters, some of them close friends who have refused to testify against him.

He is a loathsome manipulative creature who got less than he deserved. Feigning illness at that level is the lowest of the low. He lost € millions in property transactions dating back to the 90's.

RTE News Summary

Possibly and at least partly because well-known GAA personalities are (wrongly) treated as living walking saints among us and we are lucky to have them in our presence. Thus they can't do or say anything wrong in the nation's eyes.

(Yes, pretending to have cancer in order to extract money from people is beyond despicable.)

More seriously, as someone who knows little to nothing about GAA - and cares even less - it has always mystified me why those with any kind of GAA background are treated as lifelong heroes no matter what they do but especially in business or politics. Jim Gavin is another example - even before the "rent" issue, he was being hailed in the GAA/political bubble as some kind of surefire election winner, purely based on his sporting success and little else. Like a lot of people I'd never heard of him and when the rent issue reared its head he tried to downplay it by talking about his own financial stress at the time by playing the, "I'm-the-real victim-in-all-of-this" card.

Dave McSavage had a great skit where a GAA-loving teacher lets the class dope/thick get away with murder because, "he's handy with the hurl," or something like that.

Considering AIB wrote off a massive loan I don’t know how much of his own money he lost in property. Maybe a fair bit, us mortals have to put up a % of the value before getting a loan to buy a property, maybe GAA heads also put in a bit.

Meanwhile his sister has been charged with money laundering and I remember the mortgage selling business. Is she still really an accountant? Surely any reputable body would chuck her out by now? Although maybe they have to wait until after the next court case.

Charming family

The question asked was:- How did he get away with it for so long?

The simple answer is:- The bigger the lie, the more who will believe it. It might have been Adolf Hitler who said that.

Furthermore, those who I think lost most money here were those who could afford to. Amazing how stupid or innocent some of these people are

Unlike his sister it seems he didn't alert "the authorities" and appear on their radars; the targets for his lies and deceptions seemed to be friends, family, acquaintances, and high net-worth individuals. His sister by contrast, fell foul of Revenue and the Gardai, which signalled the start of her downfall. Strangely, I can't remember her or her coconspitors, the "lawyers", serving any time in jail.

She "trained as an accountant". That doesn't necessarily mean that she is, or was, a registered member of any accountancy body.

Bertie Ahern often described himself as an accountant. In fact he was a bookkeeper in the Mater Hospital.
