Has anyone used this way to abtain a degree?

Would love to know what you think and how difficult it was and how much time you need a week to do this, I work full time and have a child, so giong to evening college is a no no for me at the moment. Studyng at home after he goes to bed would be better as I am not giving any more of his time to something else.. I already completed a two yr city and guilds certificate course many yrs ago so I might be excepmt from a subject or two maybe!!!
 
I havent used Oscail, but Im currently doing a degree with the University of London. Its fantastic, you can work at your own pace, resources available if you want them, and because Im only doing 2 subjects a year (out of a max of 4) Im only putting in a few hours a week with a concentrated effort in the weeks before the exams. Ive only done 2 exams so far and I got very high marks so thats kind of set the bar for me and given me an indication of how hard it is and how much work is involved.

I think it depends on what you study how easy/hard it is. Some subjects lend themselves to distance learning, Im doing Philosophy, lot of reading, lot of researching different points of view etc... With the internet at my disposal and textbooks available cheap on amazon, it suits well to studying at a distance.

Id love to do Astrophysics next but I doubt that would go well on the distance learning route as there would be practical work too.
 
Truth seeker, sounds fantastic, I would love to futher degree in IT or Business. Can you give me details, can you start at anytime during the yr, and do you ahve to actually go to london, you can private message me if you like thanks you.

I dont know how it works for other courses but for Philosophy I applied, was accepted, and paid my registration fee etc last year around May. The relevant dates for applying and registering for courses are individual to the course - so check the website for whatever you are interested in.

Then in September I was sent some books, booklets, coursework guides, access to their online library, past exam papers etc..

In January I applied for exams - to sit in a Dublin exam centre so I had to apply to them as well.

I studied away at my own pace using the material sent to me, the internet, books and in may I sat 2 exams. I got my results in August and around 3 weeks ago sent off my re-registration fee and am now on my way for the next 2 exams.

Im actually doing the Diploma first, I did it that way in case I didnt enjoy it I wouldnt have committed too many years to it - but as it happens I like it so will definitely be going on to do the Degree.

Have a look on their website and see what you think. At this stage I think youd be looking at registering for the academic year 2011/2012 - and that may not suit you.

If you want to get the full picture of distance learning you should also look at The Open University - they operate in Ireland and have an office in Dublin.
