Hi! I wonder does anyone know if a person diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease - specifically Ulcerative Colitis - would be entitled to Disability Allowance? Does anybody know any person who has this illness and is on Disability Allowance?

Well GP has filled in disability allowance application form stating that illness is for an indefinite period and person is attending a specialist.

It depend how bad it is... Ulcerative Colitis is a horrible condition and it can effect people differently. Is the person attending hospital, maybe in and out of hospital every few months, taking a lot of medication and having monthly infusions to keep the illness at bay. Some people get UC and it can clear up in no time and others get it and suffer the most horrible effects of it, like ulsers in the mouth were you are barely able to talk. I suppose it depends on the how bad the persons condition is. If the GP says your not fit then I would suppose your not fit.

Thank you for replying Tilly D. The position is that my sister finds it extremely hard to go anywhere. She does not drive and has to walk everywhere as she lives in a place where there is no public transport. She is somewhat incontinent so mainly this is the reason she would not be able to hold down a job as she could be hours before she could risk going out in the morning. Also despite medication she seems to get flare ups quite a bit. No she has not been hospitalised but should have been in my opinion on a number of occasions but she would not go.
