Direct labour build - Plastering

There's a trade off. Plasterer has less work to skim plasterboard, to plaster blockwork , he has to first put on a coat of sand and cement, and then a finish coat. But to get plasterboards up cost more, ie cost of boards and slabbers labour cost too. In our self build, we had a mixture, all external walls were dry lined, whereas all internal ones were sand and cemented. Up stairs were obviously dry lined, stud walls .

I'm trying to decide whether to slab my internal walls with plasterboard or if we will use sand/cement (block walls in a newbuild). All external walls will be slabbed with insulated plasterboard. If slabbing the internal walls I would put this up myself and then get a plasterer to skim it. Are there major advantages/disadvantages to each of the systems, and would I expect much of a difference in cost?

Just finished skimming new build. 4000 sq ft. 3 floors, 2nd floor hollowcore flooring. All external walls used insulated plasterboard and all internal walls used regular plasterboard. Don't forget that all the slabs have to be bonded before skimming. External plastering cost €6k labour and all internal skimming cost €7.5k. this price did not include slabs and fitting of slabs. Extreemly happy with result, walls are as smooth as glass. Fitted steel onto groundfloor ceilings to take the slabs instead of timber as there will be no movement in the ceilings so no cracks etc. This cost €1900 materials and labour. Shop around for price of plasterboard, found big differences in prices.

Thanks Austik,

How did you attach the plaster board? Dabs, mushrooms, or a combination of both?

Hi rmdt
Used compound (dabs) (be careful there are different qualities available) for all the internal walls and used mushrooms on all the external walls. If your blockwork is well done this will be sufficient.

These prices seem expensive to me. I got all my internal walls skimmed for €5/sq M and the 8x4 slabs put up (screwed) for €6/sheet. The internal area is 660sq M. The Outside is costing €1500 for a sand/cement nap finish for 1900sq ft bungalow.

Hi builder ed
660 sq m @ €5 = 3,300 - I had more than twice the internal area to skim and this price included all bonding.

External plastering cost €6k labour and all internal skimming cost €7.5k.

Austik, - puzzled as to why the internal skimming cost more than the external work? Isn't there more labour involved in applying a scratch coat and then a finish coat to the exterior?

Also, can you share where you ended up buying you insulated plasterboards?

Hi tyrekicker
Re-checked my figures. 13.5K total labour cost for external plastering and internal skimming. Got a total figure from the plasterer, it was just the way I paid him, gave him 6K when outside was finished and 7.5K when inside was finished. Total internal floor area 411 sq m. Paid 5.80 per 8 x 4 slab and 20.70 per 8 x 4 x 38mm insulated slab. (ex vat) but got €125 discount knocked off bill after these prices. purchased slabs in Greens Hardware, Ahascragh Co. Galway. Didn't purchase much other materials there but found them cheapest for slabs. Free delivery also.
