Dining Room Table recommendation?

Looking for a 5 ft diningroom table to seat six. Would also be great if it could extend to fit 8 or 10. Would prefer oak or mahogany. Has anyone seen anything to fit that description in furniture shops within a 60 mile radius of North Co Dublin?Would it be worth travelling up North for a better price or selection?

Would like a hardwood chairs too match but have seen dark brown leather upholstered chairs and wonder how well they would wear over the years? Expect to use this table and chairs for everyday use-from dining to homework etc.

Hi Marple,

Welcome to AAM.

Perhaps you will find something useful here from

Can't help but just wondering, would mahogany not be too delicate for everyday use? Considering options myself.

Thanks, Sue Ellen for that. Had seen those posts. Unfortunately, I know what I want and didn`t find it in furniture.ie. Nice stuff there but I`m steering clear of pine as I want a harder timber and also a change from the pine look.

Actually found a nice ash table yesterday but didn`t like the chairs that went with it. The dark brown leather ones are just a little too current for my tastes and the wooden ones werè too casual/kitcheny for our dining room.

Mahogany, Toby, is a hard wood so I`ve always assumed it`s very robust. Now a light timber with a mahogany stain(you see a lot of the Malaysian rubberwood stuff like that) can show up dents very easily.

Anyway, still seeking five foot long rectangular table with two extending ends, preferably, and nice solid wood chairs.

Hi Marple,

I'd like a new table/chairs also mainly because I want to get away from mahogony and go for teak!

I know where you are coming from about the chairs. The only point I would make about your solid wood chair is that there are a lot of those around without any upholstering, at all, and it makes them quite uncomfortable.

At Christmas I saw a long, dark table in Dunnes Stores in Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. I'm not too sure if had extending ends but it did appear to be quite reasonable. Certain branches are testing out furniture sales so they might be worth a call. They were selling the chairs that you describe with the all leather covering and I think it makes for too dark an overall appearance.

Came across this [broken link removed] on google and it might be worth a browse.

Might be worth your while to e-mail Richard at furniture.ie as he is has been very helpful to others on AAM and perhaps he might be able to point you in the right direction.

A few of my favourites for furniture are:

[broken link removed] - expensive though
Dublin Furniture Store, Capel St., D/1 (mainly teak tho)
Furniture Designs,Old Bawn rd, Tallaght, Dublin 24, 4515326 - they have a website but I can't find it at the moment.

HTH. P.S. No connection with any of the above companies just a shopaholic :)

P.P.S. Wouldn't be my choice but what about = €639.95
