Hi everyone. I am 26yo and I have a diploma in Business. I am eager to go travelling for a year or so but I am also eager to go back to college part time and do a 4 year degree course as I want to set up my own business eventually.

Some people have said do your degree and then go travelling but I was wanting to go travelling first, then come back do my degree and hopefully set up my own business or go into management and settle down.

Can you just give me your opinion as I know the decision is mine untimately but I want to see what other people think.

As long as you think you are fairly level headed, my advice would be to travel first. My reasoning is, if you do the degree course you will be that little bit older and may after all your study be eager to start your business ASAP - you may go all entrepreneurial and the travel thing might seem silly or irritatingly bohemian to you!

On the other hand, if you travel first you will have the time and detachment to assess your options - you may even decide not to do the degree. Just try to keep a level head - things always look better and more romantic in exotic places.

And of course, it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done ;)

Thanks for that. I was thinking that I would be eager to set up business/get a good management career job and prob wouldnt wanna go. I'd say it will be travel first but just wanted opinions on it.

Go now. It would be much harder to go in four years as you might have a serious girlfriend or kid or something,. You never know. Do it now while you have freedom because the longer you stick around the more likely you are to end up with responsibilities in some shape or form that will make it more difficult to go in four years!

Go now, also you have less responsibilities now.

I know age of travel isn't important, but you may feel better about going now. Nowadays it is nearly an understood thing that people go travelling for a year or so in their 20s.

As you are relatively young you probably won't mind about staying in youth hostels/camping etc as you travel. This means that you can keep the cost of your travel down. As you get older, you tend to want more of the creature comforts (good standard accomodation, square meals in restaurants as opposed to street vendors).

Regarding myself, I remember getting all round Italy for less than what I would spend on a mini break now. Staying in nice hotels pushes up the cost:)

Go now, build up some work experience and when you come back (or while you are travelling) you could do a Masters program and forget about the primary degree....That's what I did!

Travel now and then get the degree. When you're an aul fella looking back on your life, you won't regret the travelling one single bit. :)

Go now. If you put travelling off you'll get caught up with different things and may never go. If you do your degree and then decide to go travelling you may find that you feel a bit old for hostelling etc. I know that 31 isn't 'old' and also that you're never too old to travel but as so many people travel for a gap year etc you may find yourself out of the loop when mixing with fellow travellers. Also as they say travel broadens the mind and you may decide you want to do something else altogether on your return or you may love it so much you'll end up staying. Enjoy your time away! There's plenty of time to 'settle down' when you're back home!

why dont you do the degree, but travel for the 3 months of summer holidays ? theres easily a years worth of summer holidays inside a 4 year degree.

Thanks folks. Well its clear what I should do from all your opinions, lol, just wanted to confirm what I thought. Thanks again.

blondebimbo - its a degree at ngiht as I work full time so travel during the summer wouldnt be possible

you could well find somewhere u want to stay during your travels and be torn between returning for the degree minus fees . good luck
