A friend who has PRSI cover has just been charged 2 x €150 for periodontal treatment (top and bottom). It appears that it falls under the scaling and polish side of things and states it's partially covered online. i.e. you are entitled to scaling and polish OR part-subsidised periodontal treatment. They requested a receipt but it doesn't state any reduction for PRSI. Is this a normal fee for this type of work ?

It seems strange if there was such a payment from PRSI that it would come out as 2x €150.
Any chance they had already availed of dental benefit earlier in the year?

From 31 January 2026, a payment of €50 towards either a scale and polish or - if clinically necessary - €42 for periodontal treatment, is available once a calendar year. If the cost of either cleaning or periodontal treatment is more than that amount, you must pay the balance - capped at €15 for a scale and polish. There is no cap on the balance charged for periodontal treatment.

There is no cap because it depends how much treatment they needed. How bad are their gums? How long did the treatment take?

They needed 2 fillings (molars @ €180 each) as well so it was done over two days. So they are entitled to €42 towards the periodontal. I'm guessing the treatment took about 20 minutes on top of the fillings. They had a gum infection which prompted the clean I guess. Add the antibiotic and it was €700 in total.

Periodontal work is eligible for tax relief if that's any assistance. The dentist must complete a Med 2 form.
