Denied internet at work

Just got a new computer at work, all the PCs are connected to broadband through a server. I have access to email but only a certain number of PCs are allowed internet access i.e. the bosses.

Is there any way around this or will I have to spend the rest of my working days dying of boredom.

Thanks Guys

You'll probably have to spend your days dying of boredom. We have a similar policy in our job in that you have to have a viable business case to have internet access. Everyone has intranet access though.
If it's company policy I would imagine there is very little you can do, outside of finding some backdoor way of getting in which would probably be enough to get you into serious trouble if discovered!

Will just have to beg to the boss I guess

Thanks anyway

What about actually doing some work? Does your employer expect a certain amount of work done every day? It makes me sick the way a lot of people (who are well paid) think nothing of wasting time on the internet at work, while others are killed out from work.

Employers have cottoned on to this over the last few years. I notice in jobs, that while we have internet, there is so much work laid out, that we have no time to access the internet. I have found it more and more difficult over the past few years to fit all my work into the 40hour week. I wouldn't mind having to work very fast all the time if I was well paid for this, but I'm not. I find that I am exhausted each evening when I come home from work, and I don't have the energy at the weekend to do anything nice. I have changed jobs a number of times, but it seems like all jobs are the same nowadays.

Why not upskill and get a better job?

This reminds me of the Australian car sticker from a number of years ago : "I want a job, not work".

Seriously though your employer has to manage capacity ie in the service sector that is your time. Hence the rationing of the web facility.

I have already upskilled at work, but the employers want experience as well. I am a qualified accountant, working as an assistant accountant. I also have a business degree and a postgrad, so I have done all the right things regarding education. I am deliberately not going for the accountant jobs, because I might have to even work longer hours.

Maybe you should go for the accountant jobs and then you would have the assistant.

I certainly don't have access to the internet either in work....just our own intranet. Wouldn't have time to browse either !

I work for BOI & we all found it highly amusing a few yrs back when our head boss got booted out for looking up "escorts" on the net !
A bit ironic seeing as the rest of us are not allowed access....perhaps for some people maybe just as well

As its a recurring problem perhaps a time management course would help.

Would agree, Buzybee, sounds like you need to get the stress sorted, especially as your weekends are ruined too. I did time management course and found it excellent. simple things like "to do" lists, minimised time on phone, satnding up to end unnecessary conversations with chatty "visitors" to desk, loads of little things! You can only do so much in a day!

Clubman, it was done in-house through employer, as I asked for it myself through preformance review procedures. Based around videos and power point presentation over one day (more time mismanaged?!?!... ) so i presume such DVDs, videos are readily available? really, all common sense when thigns are pointed out to you ...like when the boss wants something done NOW! and you say "I'll put it on my list and will try to get to it but...!"

I've asked for similar courses for the past 2+ years of reviews too but there was no time to arrange them!

Thanks, but it is very expensive at 400 Euro. The thing is, I read articles on time management before. I have set times for attending to emails. I do not answer the phone every time it rings, but I let it go to voice mail, and deal with the queries later. I make a list of things to do every evening, so I know what to start in the morning. I try to reconcile lots of statements and allocate lots of payments at a time, rather than doing a few things more often.

I don't take a morning break, but have coffee at my desk. I try not to get into conversations with others during the working day. If I have to go to another part of the building, I make sure I have a number of jobs to do en route.

I am already doing a lot of the 'ideal' things, but I just cannot fit all the work into the day. It is not something wrong with me, as my predecessors and successors in jobs have all said the exact same thing.

I will have to accept that if I want a less stressful job, I will have to try and get an easier job, with less pay. I am already on 28K so I don't really want to earn any less.

One good thing, I dont' want to spend money at all. I go through so much to earn the money, that I don't want to waste it on things I don't need.

Your employer might be interested in funding/arranging such a course if it might be beneficial for you and them in the long run? Mind you - I'm still trying to get mine to sort things out. They're perfectly willing but there never seems to be time!

Would someone care to split this thread as the majority of discussion doesn't seem to have anything to do with the original query.
