My dell laptop is not working and when I checked the power it is not registering that it is on mains instead of battery. I think the adaptor is broken somewhere along the wire going into the back of the laptop. There is power going in because the box type thing(sorry) has a green light on and is making a noise.

I phoned Dell and a new one is €79 and they dont know when it is going to be in stock. Anyone any ideas of where I can pick one of these up for less.

Sounds like the cable between the transformer box and the power tip may be kinked/broken. If it was mine I would try to identify where and then look at cutting the cable back to before the break and attaching the power tip (or a suitable replacement) back on. If you don't know how to do this then get somebody with basic skills with electrics to help. Otherwise try eBay (reputable sellers only obviously) or maybe www.dealextreme.com or the like.

That's exactly what has happened. I think I can see as well where the wire is borken - it looks like the metal bit is coming through the black wire just beside where it connects to the laptop. I am next to useless at technical things, so I wont be able to sort it.

Will have a look on ebay see what I can get - dont think I can wait around for someone to have a look at it.

They seem to be available on eBay for about €30 delivered. www.DealExtreme.com have a few "universal" laptop power supplies. If I recall correctly the Dell Inspiron 1300 has a regular "barrel" connector and not one that is less common (e.g. [broken link removed] style).

I got one a while back for an older Dell Inspiron from an electronics importer company in Cork for around 25€ inc P & P, I think. Cant remember their name, but should come up with a google!
