Deleting Windows Media Player

Hi,

I got a laptop with media player pre-installed (I'm using Vista). Only problem is when i play a song it usually takes a minute or so for the player to kick in. All other aspects of the pc run smoothly. I'm looking to delete the current media player and download windows media player 11 to replace it. i've downloaded it but the pc says I can't replace my current player with and older version and I also can't uninstall it! Any suggestions?

Thanks

WMP v11 is the latest version. What version do you have already installed that you are getting the error that you mention? Have you Googled for information about removing WMP and installing a different version?

I can't find out what version it is, the labtop is 2 months old so i assume it's fairly up to date. Having googled it many people are having a similar problem but they just want to get rid of media player altogether whereas I want to reinstall it to test if it's faster. I can't understand why it's not in the 'add/remove programs' in the control pannel

I had the same problem with Vista everything in Windows Media Player has a delay before it starts. I use Media Monkey instead for music and VLC for Video. Never liked Windows Media Player myself. I've gone back to XP though, as I can't move folders properly in Vista.

Try browsing in Windows Explorer to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player then right click on wmplayer.exe and choose Properties > Version and see what it says.

I've seen various problems with copying/moving files/folders in Vista mentioned recently. For example TheRegister mentions some problems here and I think that they also have articles on problems where files/folders ostensibly copy but don't actually copy!

I went into the properties, it's version 11 alright. I tried to delete it from that page but it says I need permission to delete it  I have administrative control over the pc so what does this mean?!

Just downloaded media monkey and it looks pretty good.

Thanks for the replies

Media Monkey's not perfect. No media player is. But I like it because it works with filetree (filenames) and ID3 tags. You can correct one with the other. So it great for correcting tags en mases. Also it works with all the MP3 players, iPods, Creatives, My Sony phone etc. So one application to do them all. Its not as slick as iTunes but its far more powerful. IMO.

Foobar2000 is the HiFi gurus audio player. But I could never get to grips with it. Some applications are built on top of Windows Media Player so its best to leave it installed. IMO.

What "page"? Do you mean that you tried to delete it directly from Windows Explorer? If so this is not a good idea!
