Delayed stage payment - advice please

I've written into the first time buyers forum also but I just want to bring this to a wider audience. If the issue of the stage payment cheque due to either bank or solicitor ineptitude and my builders are now seeking a penalty. Where do I stand, has anyone experienced this before. Stage payment was due to be paid last Friday. Cheque promised to be received by bank today Thursday cheque hasn't arrived. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If there is a clause in your building contract entitling your builder to a penalty for delayed stage payment and the delay was due purely to bank ineptitude, I would suggest you take it up with the bank. I would see it as unreasonable for the builder to charge you any more than their own interest charges and/or bank penalties - but that's my gut feeling.
