This is a curious one.

A friend of a friend passed away. He was never married, but is survived by a child who lives abroad and which he never registered for guardianship for. He was also is survived by a brother. His parents are long deceased.

Who is his next of kin?

"Who is his next of kin? "

In what context? Do you mean who can inherit? Who can extract a Grant to his estate?

In practical terms, I have found the "next of kin" issue primarily arises in medical situations. A classic one is a non married couple (hetero- or homo-) where difficulties can arise in life/death situations where blood relatives want to make decisions against the wishes of the non -ill partner.

If its an inheritance matter, then the rules of intestacy apply if there is no will- child inherits all.
