Have any suppliers of services, goods or tradesmen been hit with this request in the current climate?
You do the work, providing the good or service now and get paid in several months or years time?

I haven't been hit with that one and woudn't for one moment entertain that idea. One of the reasons for the current mess was the stupid credit that was given during the 'boom'.

I was told this by a stone supplier coming to me looking for work to quote on this morning. He was told it recently by an electrician he knows well. Seemd this was requested last December 2009.

Utterly astonishing.

I heard of this going on during late 2008 and 2009. A lot of good sub contractors got their fingers burnt, through trying to keep up good relations with builders and developers who could not afford to pay them. Even heard of contractors being asked to take vacant properties off developers hands (that they couldn't shift) as part payment! Begs the question were some of these developers wreckless or just victims like we are led to believe?

My husband has a small construction company and he does a lot of grant work for house adaptation or disability bathrooms etc. The contract is obviously with the client and the grant is issued by the local authority to the client after the works are completed. This is usually in the region of 6 weeks after completion of the job.

Many of the clients are elderly and financially hard up so they cannot fund the job up front so in effect my husband funds the work and waits for the cheque to arrive and gets paid then. Amounts can vary from €3,000 to €35,000 coming initially from my husbands pocket / supplier accounts / overdrafts. He always pays his subcontractors when they have finished their part. Just today I was asking him whether he should consider asking them (his blocklayer, electrician, plumber etc.) whether they would like the work but that they need to wait until the payment cheque is issued.

He is not keen on doing this but I reckon if they don't have work on and are happy to do this, they will need the money just as much in six weeks time as now . It seems fair to me. Obviously much would depend on how much they trust the person proposing this. In our case they would have a long work history with my Husband and would know he always pays.

I don't know if he will take this route though.

Friends of ours recently (pre xmas) quotes for laying a patio in there garden and it was too expensive for them - they made this known and one guy allowed them to pay 50% the cost there and then and the other 50% in 3 months (now-ish).

They got the work done and have it all paid for now.

According to them - this was offered by the service provider and not suggested by them...
