deep mantel piece affecting insert stove performance?

Hi Folks
I recently got an insert stove retro-fitted into my fireplace. Contrary to expectations I ain't shedding any clothes as a result - the heat output has left me a little underwhelmed, not getting the room anywhere beyond about 19c burning wood in the fairly mild outside temps of right now.
I'm wondering does the fact that I have a deep limestone 'box' surround affect things? This is 7"/ 18cm deep and about 10" from the stove box (all the way around). Might it adversely affect the flow of convected air rising from the stove? The surround gets pretty damn hot in the area above the stove and I suspect this may be due to the stove heating up the air within the surround's cavity ( left unfilled ) as much as heat impinging on the surround surface.
FWIW it's a 5kw stove, Nestor-Martin IT13, in a mid-size room.
