decking

we're thinking of putting decking at the back of our house outside the french doors, i saw decking in woodies at 20% off which seems to be ok value given that they give you the full structure for supporting the decking as well as the boards themselves.

However there is about a two foot drop outside our french doors (we have three steps there) so i think the standard structure from woodies wouldn't do as it's only about 3 or 4 inches thick.

My wife's uncle is a handyman who could create a wooden structure (using 6 x 2 timbers maybe) and then put decking boards on top of it.

I'm wondering where we could just source decking boards at good value?

Thanks..

Depends on where you are based but most builder's merchants could do a better deal for you on treated decking timbers if you buy the lot in bulk, alternatively you could try a local sawmill, a lot of these produce fencing timbers anyway and some now specialise in decking material. Don't forget you will probably be building small pads in blockwork to support your deck, so you'll need sand, cement, gravel and 4" blocks/ stock brick as well. The most important part of the whole process is careful planning to minimise waste and optrimise the lengths of decking timbers you can use. Levels and setting out are also critiical but once you've established these the deck should go down in no time, weather permitting of course...

thanks Carpenter!!

in the event of us wanting to build an extension in 2 or 3 years time would this structure be difficult to move and then place at the end of the extension?

How long is a piece of string? The weight really depends on the size obviously. I have a small 16 sq.m deck in my garden which could be easily lifted by 3 men. You could plan your decking arrangement so that the deck is made up in two halves to allow for easier handling, but when the deck is down you don't really want to have to move it again, could you consider any possible future extension in your design and plan around it? I'd imagine if you move a deck and resite elsewhere some problems with levels are just bound to happen, will the deck sit flat/ move etc.

Thanks again Carpenter.

it's a mid terrace house so the decking would be the whole width of the house at the back which is exactly where the extension would be going.

the size would be around 5 metres by 5 metres i think so maybe 2 pieces would be the best option.

we're not planning on staying in this house long term so if we did an extension we'd be happy to just stick the decking at the end of it too look good before selling it. we wouldn't worry about any longer term levels issues i think.
