I moved away from the UK and continued to pay debts. I became unemployed about 2 and half years ago and through a lot of negotiation with the banks in the UK they refused to help. I had no choice but to stop paying.
I am just a person who was unable to pay back the last 2 years of a 5 year loan in the UK. After trying to negotiate by the advise from national debt line in the uk the banks refused to help. I could not go bankrupt in the UK because I did not live there. I am unable to receive a uk court order, you need to be resident in the country.
There were two banks. 4k loan and a 7k loan. Which I had paid the interest at the point of stopping. They have me down at my mothers address in the UK even though I dont live there anymore. Through continous chasing for about 3 months all went very quiet, this was 2 years ago at least, they had stopped chasing. All was quite for 2 years until now.
Now, one of them have contacted my mothers house again out of the blue saying that they have passed the debt on. There was also a letter from a debt collection agency stating they are now the guys looking for it. They had breifly spoke to my Mother on the phone asking where I was, which she replied, ''living abroad, I dont know where''...The conversation ended there.
I am in a European country. Which does not have any agreements with the UK in terms of debt.
Now, my question is. Do they have any real chance of even beginning to recover the debt, even if they do not know where I am. Would it be better if they did know that I was, in fact, no longer in the country? What would be the situation if they did find out where I was? UK laws don't work here, where I am. Are they just going to keep chasing and chasing at an address, and at a phone number where I dont live?
Any 'constructive' advise from people who actually know would be great. Can I politely ask people who dont know, to not post the first thing that pops into their head as it's very un helpful.
Thanks
