Our child was awarded damages in the Circuit Court following an injury. As a minor, we have been told that the damages will not be paid to him immediately but will be held by the Court. We have 3 questions:

1. What age will he have access to the settlement? 18?
2. Will Interest be paid on that amount?
3. The only proof we have of the amount is a small receipt. Should we have something more?

money will be paid out to him/her at 18. That is to protect him against anyone else using the money. Interest is paid.

you have a receipt, does the size really matter? Would a receipt running to 4000 pages give you more comfort?

You could get the information you require from your solicitor or the relevant court office.

The settlement figure would have been stated to and approved by the Judge in open court.

If funds are needed urgently for e.g. educational purposes you may apply to the Court to have some of the amount paid out.

Thanks for your replies, which are reassuring.

The size of the receipt is not important. I was just surprised that we had not been given anything more official e.g. a court document detailing the outcome of the case.
