Hi,

I would be grateful for an idea of what rates plumbers charge on a daily basis? Or a ball park figure to remove existing bath, toilet and sink and install a jacuzzi bath, double shower with concealed shower, toilet bowl and sink and also install a devi mat - and in second bathroom to move toilet bowl, sink 2 feet and install an electric shower and electric towl rail? Any pointers would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Sounds like there is a bit of building work involved, if I read it correctly , sink a room by 2 foot ? So it would be difficult to give a ball park figure, it would be necessary for someone to survey the job. Aslo a sparks would be required too. I could PM you details of a very good and reliable plumber in the south east if you wish.

With regards to rates, I would say that €400 a day for a plumber and apprentice would be a good price. Company rates would be approx €48 an hr for plumber and maybe €15-16 an hour for apprentice. That would be €500 ish a daily rate.

Hi Leo,

That's correct - in one of the bathrooms I need the sink to be moved two foot and toilet also to facilitate a shower. Thanks for replies so far.

We're doing a self build in the South East. We are using L Butler (pm me for number). He is based in Carlow town.

He possibly may not be the cheapest guy on the block, also very busy even in this economical climate. But I think that stands as testament to him taking a real pride in his work. He works weekends and evenings. Also incredibly neat and excellent at thinking outside the box when presented with challenges.

I've no connection except I'm a happy customer.

Hi Mummol,

Thanks for that - I have a plumber in mind again he comes highly recommended - just trying to see how much I should budget for.

Thanks for info,

Get three quotes then you can get an average cost. A daily rate is misleading as it will not include any materials that will be needed to complete job. If someone comes highly recommended ask them for a price. You may need to wait as good people will always have things on the go.

Why three quotes? Why not four, five or two?

A daily rate is imho a very bad idea - it rewards the plodder and incentivises the tradesman to be as inefficient as possible.

Three quotes in my opinion is the lowest number that you can get a reliable average from. Four, five and six are better but you may be restricted to amount of contractors in your area. Also going over the same thing with three different contractors is time consuming enough however about more.

Two quotes is too little information to base opinion in my book.

But averages are hardly relevant,eg if you get 3 quotes for €2,500, €3,000 and €10,000 (as has happened me in the past), the average is €5,166, ie pretty much double the quotes of 2 of the 3. And, if you have someone who has been recommended to you for quality and reliability, it seems pointless to go through a quoting exercise if you're going to pick them anyway. And if you don't, then shopping on price is merely going to get you either the cheapest guy or the best salesman.

i don't mean, the mean. the average and fair price for your job would seemed to have been €2500 to €3000. the more quotes gives you a better idea of what the job is actually worth and how much room there is to haggle.

Hi,

I'll take on board your advice. In previous work I've done around the house I always used the one plumber but have decided to move away from him as he never turns up when he says he would and not 100% happy with work he had done i.e. he left a junior plumber to install a stove - never checked if after he had finished - we were none the wiser and on one occasion had to call out the fire brigade because of the way the flue from stove was installed and that plumber was not cheap either! The guy who is coming next week is supposed to be very tidy and neat and does a good job - so will get a quote and will try another also.

Many thanks for all help.
