Hi, I have decide that Croatia, Dubrovnik would be a nice place to go on a holiday as everybody raves about it but I was wondering, has anybody stayed in Dubrovnik who could recommend a lovely hotel with ocean view and balcony and also, anybody done any of the trips to montenegro and what did they think? Thanks for any advice
 
Hiya, I've been to Dubrovnik twice and actually got married there August 2007. It's just beautiful. Both times we stayed in the Hotel Argentina. Gorgeous hotel overlooking the sea and about 10 mins walk from the old town centre. www.gva.hr is the website. It's not cheap but in my opinion well worth it. There are also apartments you can rent in the old town, just Google it and you'll find them easily enough. They're far cheaper. There are lots of trips you can do while there. We visited some of the islands and some other towns close by. We also did the trip to Montenegro and Mostar. I think both trips take up a whole day and quite a bit of time on a bus but to be honest it was worth it, especially Mostar. There's not a lot in Montenegro but it is beautiful. I love Dubrovnik as it's not really commercialised - there are no hideous holiday apartment blocks all over the place and no heavy boozers around at night time! I'm not one for lying about in the sun all day so there's lots to see to keep you occupied. It can get very hot at peak season - approx 40 degrees so if that doesn't suit maybe May or June would be a better option. My Paddy skin nearly melted in my wedding dress!! Hope that helps a bit.
 
ive been to montenegro and can really recomend it - particularly the town of Budva - and various towns closeby - stunning is the only name for it - carefull if your driving there though - the locals are lethal
 
Montenegro beats Croatia hands down for stunning scenery and Kotor and Budva are much cheaper and have cleaner beaches than Southern Croatia. The coastal route from Dubrovnik to Kotor is incredible. Take the bus, so you can spend more time appreciating it.
 
Thanks for all your repliles, I looked into that Grand hotel argentina in Dubrovnik and it is stunning but it seems very expensive, must ring up the concorde travel place and see what they charge all in with flights. Was thinking of renting a car though, so we could go down for the day to Montengro at our own leisure, go to Kotor etc. But I must admit, the prices of hotels in Dubrovnik are shockingly expensive, we were going to go to Sorrento but that was too dear so we decided on Croatia, as beautiful views also and old towns etc. now we really want to go to Croatia after looking into it, but it is still costing the same as sorrento almost. Bloomin sea view 4 star hotels!!!
 
If you want a much cheaper holiday, then spend only a day or two in Dubrovnik and the rest of the time in Kotor and Budva. Kotor Old Town is beautiful and because it is not over-run with tourists, prices tend to be 50% less than in Dubrovnik.
 
For a cheaper hotel I would recommend staying in Lapad - it is just 10 mins in a taxi to the old town, or you can take the bus, and it has the benefit of also being right beside the beaches.
I stayed in this hotel and can highly recommend it.


Lovely hotel, very friendly staff and we had a room with the most beautiful sea view and 5 to ten minute walk to the beach. Also reasonable in price for the quality compared to others.

We booked ours through Concorde travel so have a look and see if you can get a good deal through them. Try booking independantly also but I remember it wasn't much cheaper for us to do that and they looked after transfers, boat tickets etc (we stayed on an island for a week) and they had a very helpful rep in the hotel in case you had any problems.

How long are you going for? 5 nights to 1 week would be plenty in Dubrovnik in my opinion. I would highly recommend fitting in some time on one of the nearby islands aswell if you could - even 2 or 3 nights. Think Kortula is the nearest to you, although I haven't been to that particular one myself I've heard excellent reports about it.
 
I've been to both and loved each trip. Be prepared for a long wait at the Croatian/Montenegrian border if you do choose to cross over.

Croatia seems more welcoming to tourists from the west and are well used to the Irish (there is a famous guy in Dubrovnick who wears GAA shirts to lure the Irish to his place of work)

In Montenegro they are more used to tousists from the Slavick countries and a lot of them have very poor or no english and can come accross as rude.
 
Thanks for everything, but can I ask, because it is two couples and mum!we will need 3 bedrooms so does anyone know of any nice villas/apartments near the town were we could stay. It just seems it is more expensive for a single room, if you can get a single at all and hers has to be the best room, biggest balcony etc so we were thinking Villa. Also, how long does it take to go to Kotor, the rest wouldn't be mad into uplifting luggage etc so I doubt they would take the bait without any hard facts.!
 
It's slightly over two hours from Dubrovnik to Kotor on the bus, but the scenery along the way is stunning.
 
Montenegro is beautiful, but in my experience the hotels are generally crappy. Hotels around Dubrovnik are an awful lot better; as one previous poster mentioned, Lapad has some very good ones.
Its only a short drive to Montenegro from Dubrovnik. If I were to combine both countries for a holiday I'd sbase myself in Lapad and drive down to Montenegro. Most I'd stay over would be one night, I stayed there a couple of years ago on business and was not impressed with the standards in the hotels.
 
I stayed in the Hotel Montenegro in Becici and I couldn't find fault with it. It has it's own section of beach, which is very well kept
 
Apartments and villas in Kotor and Budva tend to be quite reasonable, with lots of beautiful properties available. Make sure to find one with a terrace and a sea view.
 
Hi, Just for other peoples future reference, I have decided to book the Hotel Argentina as it is central to Dubrovnik town with all amenities, seems to have the nicest dining/bar area, nice big balcony and sea view, pool, beach, so basically ticked all of mums boxes. Myself, husband, sister and boyfriend are getting standard double rooms as it is too expensive otherwise, because as insisted by mum, I got her the big balcony and sea view which costs, wait for this.... an extra €965 more, so €755 alone for sea view and Single supplement, then for a balcony, €210, on top of the actual price of the room, and this is excluding taxes. Penalised for being a single person, what a f*cking liberty!!
 
I am thinking of going to Montenegro in 2013. I would appreciate any updates from people who have been there in the past few years. Thinking of going to Kotor.
 
Kotor is beautiful indeed

I think that the scenery around there is easily the equal of anywhere in Croatia ... though Kotor is a fairly small town with less interest than compared to say Dubrovnik

I was less impressed with Budva and the rest of the Montenegrin coast .. somewhat over developed in places I thought ... also Montenegro doesn't have the same lovely offshore islands compared to the Dalmatian coast in Croatia.

there was some lovely scenery inland as well .. the old capital Cetinje in the hills behind Kotor (over a really crazy road) is very nice .. the new capital in Podgorica is not a pleasant place.

It's got quite a developed tourism industry .. probably nearly as busy as Croatia .. lots of Russians and Italians visiting.

Overall I'd certainly go back
