Crank call?

Hi guys,

I have received, in the past hour three calls, which contianed only silence interspersed with a "bleep", (about every four seconds), the noise reminds me of when someone, in the old coin-op days, tried calling but kept messing up the money.

I called Eircom who told me that it wasn't a line check and that, as I'm sure you all know, they only monitor outging calls so I'd have to call the Gardai to determine the call source.

Would anyone know what this is?

ALERT.

Sounds like a FAX machine with an auto-redialler (which explains the repeated calls).

Sounds a bit like somebody from abroad trying to ring through. We receive calls from a friend in Mexico every couple of months and it sounds v similar to what you say. Silence then bleep, then silence. It can take him 2 or 3 goes to get through. Just a suggestion!

Hi Gipimann,

I'm afraid it's not the high shreik of a fax machine "bleep" that I've heard before, much lower in fact, although the auto-redialler aspect could mean it's a goer.

Thanks,

ALERT.

We get this a lot - I'm fairly sure it's someone trying to send a fax.

Annoying, but they'll eventually realise.

We had two missed calls on Saturday last when there was no-one home. A strange looking number. Googled the number and it came up with an American market research firm!
Couldn't figure out what it might have been about. Could they have been collecting opinions on Hillary Clinton and her Presidential campaign given that Bill was in Dublin that weekend raising funds?
I guess we'll never know!

As other have mentioned, I would bet this is a fax.
The beeping noise is the fax trying to handshake, the screaching doesn't happen until a connection has been established. ( I think)

We were plagued with this a couple of years ago, getting calls at 4 in the morning. We eventually connected a fax to the line and managed to get the fax.

If you don't have a fax machine, you can get software fax programs (win fax?) Connect your phone line to your computer to receive the fax. Very hard to time too, unfortunately.

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I reported it to Eircom who identified it as a fax autodialler from a Hotel in Carlow. I posted here about it. If I find the post Ill link it here.

It could be someone trying to text your homephone? This happened to us a few years ago, repeated calls at regular intervals and a beeping sound.
